American troops should also be recognized as future veterans when our Congress drafts our military budgets. Therefore, this should be reflected by current veterans being afforded efficient and timely treatment under allocations from present military spending. Our military fights for our causes with a promise to volunteer their best years. As patriots, we should honor their promise and not make them have to fight another war for simple healthcare. Each military member is a life. A life that will one day go from the battlefield to the civilian world with possible losses from their brave service. As Democrats, we will dedicate ourselves to justifying the existing imbalances in spending on veterans and ensure they get the help they deserve.
More research must be done about and support servics available to veterans suffering from PTSD, mental illness, substance abuse, and homelessness/poverty. It is quite shameful how the government leaves behind this population once their time has been served. War, even training for war, changes a person forever and therefore there should be more accountability from the military to ensure extended care for those who sacrifice, and yet return home. The word "hero" should not just be reserved for the fallen or injured. Some wounds don't bleed, and yet many are still denied much needed healing. Training practices should also be reviewed.
